World Championships end on disappointing note

For the second time in the last twelve months, the ice hockey world championships ended in disappointment for Team Switzerland and Nico. Much like in 2024, the Swiss came up just short in the tournament’s final, this time falling 0-1 (OT) against Team USA.

Switzerland thus remains without a world championship title despite four appearances in the final in the last twelve years. For Nico, who supported the team in the background after tournament-ending injury in a game vs. Germany on May 15th, it was the second defeat in the final in as many years, after Swiss fell to the Czech Republic last May in Prague (0-2). He finished this year’s tournament with four appearances, two goals, one assist and a plus-3 rating.

Yesterday’s game also marked the end of a long 2024-2025 campaign for Nico and the rest of the Swiss team. After a short break and the completion of his injury rehab, Nico will soon begin preparations for the upcoming NHL season, set to begin in October. The 2025-2026 NHL campaign will feature a break in play in February, when the world’s best players will take part in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano and Cortina (ITA).
