Overtime heartbreak: Switzerland and Nico settle for silver once again
Nine wins and a 49:9 goal differential were ultimately not enough: Following a 0-1 overtime defeat against Finland in the final, Team Switzerland and Nico had to settle for silver at the IIHF World Championships for the third straight year.
Sunday night’s game-winning goal was scored by Konsta Helenius at the 10:42 mark of the first overtime period (played at 3-on-3). With that, Switzerland’s dream of capturing their first-ever world title on home ice came to an abrupt ending. Prior to the final, the Swiss had defeated Finland (4-2) in their final group stage game, before taking care of Sweden (3-1) and Norway (6-0) in the quarters and semis.
