Nico, Switzerland reach quarters but fall to Russia and Sweden
Two losses for team Switzerland and Nico at the IIHF World Championships in Slovakia. After starting into the tournament with four straight wins, the Swiss fell to Sweden (3:4) and Russia (0:3) over the weekend.
Much like the entire team, Nico enjoyed a hot start into the tournament, racking up seven points during the Swiss’ first four games. Against Sweden and Russia, however, Nico couldn’t make a difference and was held off the scoreboard in both weekend games. Thanks to their perfect start into the tournament, the Swiss nonetheless qualified for the quarterfinals for the second year in a row.
Whom they’ll face there will be determined in the final group stage games. The Swiss will take on the Czech Republic on Tuesday (6:15 am ET) in a game that will determine their seeding in the quarterfinals. A win there then will be a must if they are to advance to the semi-finals.
