NHL history was made on June 23, 2017, when Nico became the very first Swiss national to be drafted first overall in the NHL Entry Draft. The team that made the pick: the New Jersey Devils. One of the league’s most successful franchises around the turn of the millenium, the Devils won three Stanley Cup titles between 1995 and 2003. In his first four NHL seasons, Nico lived-up to his Nr. 1 billing and firmly established himself as one of the franchise’s cornerstones, representing the Devils at the 2020 NHL All-Star Game in St. Louis. On February 20, 2021, Nico was named the 12th team captain in the history of the New Jersey Devils. Now entering his eight season with the franchise from the Garden State, Nico has appeared in 469 NHL games to date, scoring 138 goals and 223 assists, including playoff appearances in 2018 and 2023.
At age 25 and already seven seasons into his NHL career, Nico has successfully mastered the step from talented prospect to franchise cornerstone and team captain for the New Jersey Devils. Off the ice, however, Nico prefers to blend in as opposed to stand out and spends most of his time away from hockey with friends and family, enjoying their company over a relaxed summer barbecue or a lazy paddle boat ride on the picturesque Aare river . That is, if he isn’t busy prepping for the upcoming hockey season. Nico understands that there is no shortcut to hockey success: „I am always striving to become the best possible version of myself, so that I am in position to support my teammates in every which way necessary.“
Always wanted to get to know Nico on a more personal level? Well, Nico’s Corner can’t quite do that but consider it a start in the right direction.
