Nico to miss rest of World Championships with injury
Bad injury news for Nico at the IIHF World Championships in Denmark and Sweden. Taking on arch rival Germany in group stage action on Thursday, Nico injured his lower body during the first period of play and did not come back. A day later, he was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after undergoing further tests.
Despite the bad news, Nico, who was named captain at the start of the tournament, will remain with Team Switzerland in Denmark, where he is expected to support the team away from the ice. At the same time, he will begin his rehab and injury treatment for the lower body injury, which is not expected to keep him sidelined for an extended period of time. However, a return before the end of the World Championships on May 25th has been ruled out.
After a strong first week of play, the Swiss currently occupy 2nd place in group A, with four wins and a lone OT-defeat to the Czech Republic. They’re assured of a spot in the tournament quarterfinals and will close out preliminary round action vs. Hungary today (2:20 PM EST) and Kazachstan on Tuesday (6:20 AM EST).
